Swannanoa is a community once anchored in textile manufacturing with Beacon Textile Manufacturing establishing itself here in the early 1900's. The town is centrally located between Asheville and Black Mountain. Prior to Interstate 40 being built, the main thoroughfare to get to Asheville was via Highway 70 which is where most of the businesses are located including the corporate offices for Ingles Supermarkets.

Swannanoa is now known as the home to Warren Wilson College, a small college emphasizing a combination of work and services with academics. Summertime brings the Swannanoa Gathering to the college, a multi-discipline traditional music program offering workshops, concerts and dances, with a staff of the finest in the folk arts from around the world.

The Western North Carolina VA Hospital and the Veterans Cemetery is also located in Swannanoa. It is one of the largest in the Southeast and is surrounded by beautiful grounds and views of the mountains. You will also find many of the local breweries establishing their brew plants in the area.
