Located just south of downtown Asheville and adjoining the Biltmore Estate is the town of Biltmore Forest which was developed on 1100 acres donated by Edith Vanderbilt. With it's own ordinances, town hall, administration and police force, Biltmore Forest was incorporated in 1923 and was planned by Frederick Law Olmsted in accordance with the concept of Landscape Architecture to preserve and protect the natural beauty of the environment. The planners had been associated with other designed areas such as Central Park in New York City and the grounds of the Biltmore Estate.
