About 20 miles north of Asheville, in Madison County is Mars Hill, NC. Mars Hill is located on the newly opened Interstate 26 corridor to Erwin and Johnson City Tennessee. Mars Hill University, a co-ed private liberal arts college, established in the 1865, is the focal point of that small community, and has a strong commitment to preserving and promoting the local music and dance traditions of the southern Appalachian area. Bascom Lamar Lunsford, the founder of the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival - which celebrates mountain music, arts and crafts every autumn - grew up in Mars Hill.
