The communities of South Asheville are found south of downtown via Biltmore Avenue (Hwy 25), Sweeten Creek Road (Hwy 25A) or Interstate 26. Interstate 40 and the Blue Ridge Parkway both cross through South Asheville as well. The main communities that comprise South Asheville are Arden, Kenilworth, Skyland, Fletcher and Biltmore Park. Located along the corridor between Hendersonville and Asheville, South Asheville has seen substantial growth in the last decade. Large retailers like Target, Lowe’s and Wal-Mart have opened stores there as well as many smaller retailers. There are also a large number of restaurants in South Asheville. With medical facilities and professional services located there too, many folks who live in South Asheville have all they need without making a trip into the city of Asheville. The Asheville Airport is in South Asheville as well as the WNC Agriculture Center.
The Kenilworth neighborhood located between the Asheville Mall and Biltmore Avenue was an independent town until it was incorporated into the city of Asheville in 1929. Grand tudor homes along with original arts and crafts cottages can be found here. Kenilworth’s founder Jake Chiles named it after the Kenilworth Castle described in a novel by Sir Walter Scott.
South Asheville is home to many subdivisions – both older established ones and newer ones. Styles range from ranchers, to two-story traditionals, to contemporary to newer arts and crafts - and with this wide variety of styles comes a variety of prices too. Strong school districts also make this one of the most desirable areas to live.
About 12 years ago, Biltmore Park was developed with a small town center concept in mind. High-end homes were first built with walking trails and a swimming pool. These were followed by condos and townhomes built alongside and above retail shops in the town center. The town center features a large movie theatre, restaurants, a Hilton Hotel, upscale retailers, a fitness center and business offices.
South Asheville neighborhoods include Arden, Ashley Woods, Ballantree, Biltmore Park, Fletcher, Kenilworth, Pinners Cove, Royal Pines, and Skyland
