Dr. Doug Bruggeman, Broker/RealtorĀ®
Doug has called Western North Carolina home for the past 16 years. Originally from Dayton, Ohio, he holds degrees in Environmental Science from Ohio University, Oklahoma State University, and Michigan State University. He began his real estate career in the late 1990s, conducting environmental site assessments for commercial real estate transactions in the Chicago market. Today, Doug continues to incorporate sustainability and environmental principles into every aspect of his real estate practice, representing clients in residential, farm and land, and commercial transactions.
In 2017, Doug developed the first continuing education course for real estate professionals focused on climate change that was approved by eight state real estate commissions and supported by the National Association of REALTORS®. His background in environmental science and real estate enables him to provide clients with a unique perspective on the evolving risks and opportunities associated with property ownership.
Doug used his expertise to developed the Landscape Asset and Risk Algorithm (LARA). His algorithm is an innovative, data-driven tool designed to help buyers identify single-family properties that minimize landscape-scale risks (such as flooding and wildfires) while maximizing landscape-scale benefits, including proximity to public spaces, golf courses, and other desirable amenities. This innovative tool can evaluate the amount of protected land within a property's viewshed which helps buyers better understand whether the natural landscape surrounding their home is likely to remain protected or could potentially be developed in the future.
