Located just south of downtown Asheville and adjoining the Biltmore Estate is the town of Biltmore Forest which was developed on 1100 acres donated by Edith Vanderbilt. With it's own ordinances, town hall, administration and police force, Biltmore Forest was incorporated in 1923 and was planned by Frederick Law Olmsted in accordance with the concept of Landscape Architecture to preserve and protect the natural beauty of the environment. The planners had been associated with other designed areas such as Central Park in New York City and the grounds of the Biltmore Estate.
A prestigious country club and golf course designed by Donald Ross, and some of the finest homes in the area - historical and new, are set in a rolling, wooded, almost rural setting. A new community just south of the Forest, The Ramble at Biltmore Forest, was recently developed on lands owned by the descendants of George Vanderbilt. This gated community has homes built by some of the wealthiest folks in the area. Located minutes from downtown Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Biltmore Estate, its south side location also makes it convenient to the Flat Rock / Hendersonville area, as well as the Asheville Regional Airport.
Just minutes from Biltmore Forest you will find the quaint Biltmore Village. Visitors can stroll along the brick sidewalks and tree-lined streets viewing the period architecture or exploring the wares offered by the diverse mix of retailers or eating at some world class restaurants. Retaining its Old World Charm and visited by millions of people each year, Biltmore Village was declared a historic district in 1989 because of its historic connection to the original planners of the Biltmore Estate.
The decendents of George W. Vanderbilt have carefully and tastefully carried on his stewardship by creating sustainable communities while protecting the natural beauty of the land. The Biltmore Farms communities of The Ramble at Biltmore Forest and Biltmore Lake are perhaps the most elegant living choices in the Asheville area.
